The participation of women in the urban design of Ciudad Universitaria and their connection with the places within it The urban space of Ciudad Universitaria, declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1999, is the setting inhabited by the students of the PC21 master's degree and our central axis for the development of our research projects for this school year. On the basis of this theoretical framework, our team decided to focus on the role of women in the campus’ design process and how they relate to this space nowadays. It came naturally to us that it should be a project that involved gender mainstreaming, bearing in mind that all the members of the team are women and that we are extremely interested in making a contribution to the management and research of cultural heritage. We began investigating whether women had been part of the design and/or creation of Ciudad Universitaria, and we found a complete absence of women in its planning and construction in the late 1920s, when the main goal was to implement a new college campus model inspired by American universities. Our project takes a critical look at this process and the architectural and urban tradition that has systematically designed cities for men throughout history. For this reason, 110 years after the incorporation of women into higher education and their increasing presence in different academic fields, this project has as an overall purpose to value the resignification that women give to CIU's cultural heritage, taking into account their needs and the new narratives that may emerge about the historical value of the space of their academic dwelling. Consequently, we have established the following goals: 1) critically analyze CIU's urban heritage, 2) examine the absence / presence of women in the planning of CIU, and 3) investigate the current experiences, uses and needs of CIU’s women in their daily life happening in its heritage spaces. With this project we seek to critically rethink CIU's urban cultural heritage, recognize its historical exclusions and, above all, suggest changes and solutions to be able to recognize women as protagonists of the space, with their specific needs and experiences, and also recognize them as active subjects capable of creating, reformulating and resignifying CIU’s environment to outline a new historical and cultural narrative of the campus. By doing so, we propose to create a methodology and a tool that allows the identification of these needs and experiences in order to be able to replicate them in different spaces of historical and cultural vale or in other universities. It also addresses the gender inequalities that still persist in them, and it secures the institutions’ rethinking of these spaces with gender mainstreaming. We will carry out a diagnosis that gives us clear and reliable information on how the women who are currently part of Ciudad Universitaria (academics, students, management, government workers, etc.), feel about, perceive and re-signify this space; and we also seek to know what they need to feel comfortable in it. The project is expected to operate as an engine that allows the reevaluation of women’s role in CIU's urban space and cultural heritage, allowing their participation in its administration and its usage. This stems from the lack of participation of women in the planning and construction of the university campus, and we ask ourselves this question: how can a space thought, designed and built by men adapt to women’s reality and needs? We intend to answer this question through women’s perspective, thus creating a juxtaposition between what exists and a future projection based on the conceptions and proposals of the people who currently inhabit it. Thereby, a space planned around gender mainstreaming could be obtained.
