No tanto a Ciudad Universitaria. No sé si Antonio Vega comenzó Arquitectura… Me tocó esa cómo me podía haber tocado otra. No olvidemos. ------------------------------------- Susana López Corcuera, our interviewee, studied Law at the Complutense University of Madrid between 1980-1985, a period in which she also began working at Cadena COPE as presenter of cultural programs and editor of the magazine that the network managed in those days. Thanks to his direct relationships with La Movida Madrileña, not only as a student, but also in his work as a documentary maker and journalist, we proposed an interview with him in order to find out what his opinion was regarding the impact of these demonstrations on society and, specifically, in Ciudad Universitaria and how these values have developed over time: Three adjectives that inspire the Movida Madrileña in you. Funny, crazy and transgressive. Do you think this cultural movement has been silenced or not remembered in Ciudad Universitaria? I can't answer you because I don't know its repercussion in Ciudad Universitaria, but I think that globally in the media it has been claimed in excess. Would you like this artistic trend to be valued in Ciudad Universitaria? If there really are germs of the Movida in Ciudad Universitaria, which I remember few, like the Spring Concert and some concerts in Caminos, I think it's good that they stand out. Were contrary voices raised as the Movida emerged? Yes, there were always opposing voices. We were at a time when there were voices against everything. Everything was a scandal. Changing some streetlights in Puerta del Sol was a cause for scandal. Did theater associations and other student and cultural groups start in the Movida? Yes, I think it was all a bit in unison, in the sense that it was conditioned by the political situation, which led to a general openness. You could see all the cinema that you didn't have access to before, you could publish books that previously only came to us from Latin American publishers ... to all the guilds. From the theater, things start to be released and in the cinema, lots of cycles begin that could not be seen before. All of this has a lot of influence. Do you know public spaces in Ciudad Universitaria that were the scene of Movida events? The field of School of Architecture, the Escuela de Caminos, the Colegio Mayor San Juan Evangelista ... Concerts were scheduled at various universities. Do you know any foreign artists who visited Ciudad Universitaria during the Movida years? Not so many artists went to Ciudad Universitaria. Foreign artists were brought in by the municipalities and performed in private venues. They weren't so aware of what was going on at the university. Did the Movida have an effect in Ciudad Universitaria clandestinely or was it officially promoted? At the beginning it arises in a normal, natural way, as a reflection of what was happening in the street, in young people of a certain social class -the university-. Then, right away in the classes and in the classrooms you start to see people who wore an aesthetic. As soon as I saw someone with pointed heels, leather jackets and more combed hair, I would approach and ask. This situation could also be seen on the street, since we identified a lot individually with aesthetics. Hence the importance of fashion design. Yeah, well, there was a lot of design influence; to go dressed in a tremendous way. Do you remember if Enrique Tierno Galván carried out any policy aimed at supporting artistic creation in Ciudad Universitaria? Specifically in Ciudad Universitaria, I don't know, but their politics always tried to promote everything that was happening in Madrid and win over all the young people. And from there, possibly, it would go to the University, although I do not remember it. Do you know the Madriz magazine, which was financed by the City Council? Yes, there were several interesting magazines at that time. Madriz was one, Borja Casani had an interesting one and there was also El Europeo ..., suddenly there began to be a press, "the modern people press." In the time of Tierno Galván it was easy to get money from the City Council, since it was a bet from the Madrid City Council. Do you know artists or people involved in the Movida that emerged or passed through Ciudad Universitaria? And have any of them carried out works in Ciudad Universitaria or were they collaborators, students, teachers ...? People who have studied, yes, but who later made works, I can't tell you. That he was a teacher ... There have been people, but I don't remember specific people. Yes, something else is known about more recognized figures, Santiago Auserón studied Philosophy .. I don't know if Antonio Vega started Architecture… The question is if they really all finished their studies. You also have to think that there was a lot of movement from outside. On the subject of plastic arts, almost everyone came from outside Madrid. Like “Las Costus”. Las Costus were from Cádiz; Ceesepe, from Valencia; Nazario, from Seville. These last two made comics, which was very important together with the fanzine as a means of expression of the underground that existed at that time. There were people from Madrid, but many came from abroad to live and gave life. Las Costus' house was a center for people who got together and had a good time, like a group of friends who met at the house of one of them. Sometimes the Movida is seen as something structured, but it was just young people doing what they could. At that time there was more freedom than in the previous time, and then you explode. There was more sexual permissiveness, in drugs, in the way of dressing, expressing oneself, ... And what happened to the Movida in the student body and in the teaching staff of Ciudad Universitaria? Everyone was aware that something was happening in Madrid, even if they were against it. In general, there was a lot of interest in knowing what was being cooked, even if you did not participate. How was the incorporation of women experienced in the rise of their presence in the classrooms? Obviously, there was more presence in the classrooms. There were careers in which there was a majority of women and others, such as technical careers, had very few. There were very few women in the faculty; I personally never had any. I had Gregorio Peces-Barba, Ruiz Jiménez, ... very prestigious men from Law, but never women. There was already a department assistant, who had joined after finishing the degree. Could it be understood that the Movida worked to equalize women and men? Not at all. La Movida was the same as always. There were very few groups with female singing members, like two or three. Most were made up of men. We have, for example, Ana Curra or "Alaska y los Pegamoides", but they stood out because of what women have always stood out for, because of their physique. And with the passage of time, was there any feminist claim? S: Not from feminism. I have a friend who is now claiming that she was in “Los Monaguillosh”, but on an individual basis. The reality is that the Movida had no feminist claim. Rock, which went in parallel, continues to be the most macho today. There is nothing more macho than a rehearsal room and groupies. You are the girlfriend of, the wife of ... I, for example, was different because I worked in the radio, but I remember going to the rehearsal premises to see groups, and what there were were girlfriends and they did not open their mouths. Yes, it is true that there was more visibility, but at the moment of truth, how many women from the Movida stood out? Do you think these women were silenced? I don't think they were silenced either. Those who had talent came out. Talent has to be linked to study, to dedication ... the problem is, when does a woman join to dedicate the same time as a man? That's the problem. Many women already wanted to enter university and study, it was another mentality, but the reality is that they did not treat you the same. I was a moderately bright student and I have friends - who later became magazine editors at the time - who attributed this to "how the teacher likes you ...". That has always existed and continues to exist. Of course, there is a long way to go. Do you think that the Madrid scene has influenced your work, or that it has had an impact on your personal life? Yes, to the same extent that what you experienced in your youth has had an impact on your personal life. The Madrid scene was my youth. I was touched by how I could have touched another. It was very intense, I had a great time. I lost many friends. At a certain point I stopped, and said "Life cannot be just this", so at one point I got off the donkey, I left everything and I dedicated myself to having daughters - something that almost none of my friends have done. Everyone thought I was a little crazy, because I had a good job, my life was a party, every night we had some "sarao" (a raquet, a noisy party): when it was not a presentation of a book it was a record, and when not, it was An exhibition and there were always canapes. We had a great time, but when I was almost 27-28 years old I said "This cannot be a constant party, life has to have another road", and thus, I decided that motherhood was what I wanted to try, and I have had three daughters, the biggest change in my life has been motherhood, which has saved me from many things. I stopped everything: I stopped going out, I stopped drinking, I stopped everything. The people who did not, the majority have fallen by the wayside. And those who have left, I know many people who have left, through Proyecto Hombre, etc. when they have left they have “passed the rice”. La Movida has a very tremendous vision of what has been a generation that has been a bit lost, in the sense of living it all without brakes without any information, like the bull when you open the door and it runs wild. I remember, for example, Juanito, who died of an overdose in a bar bathroom, I have lost friends in the most idiotic way. I remember perfectly the day they called me saying that Enrique had appeared in a portal on Espiritu Santo street. I had seen Enrique very little before, because he had gone to see a mutual friend at a psychiatric hospital where he was treating; and he was fine, he wanted to get ahead. Also, Enrique's daughter and my oldest daughter are the same age and sometimes we had played on the swings with the girls, and he always told me “I'm going to be fine, for Maria”. That has happened a lot, and for me it is such a sadness that I have a real aversion to the world of drugs, to the point that if I read a novel and realize that it is going to praise that world, I say no. Because there has been a very broad standard, and I believe that with drugs you don't have to have any broad standard. Then, it is a personal matter and each one decides what to do with their body and others, but globally, without information and in that crazy way, drugs are a horror. And also, drugs are a way to keep youth under control. In Madrid I don't see that much has happened, but it has happened in Galicia and it has happened in the Basque Country. And it was not interesting to cut that roll, because you had the people more appeased. In the same way as the aborigines in Australia - and I have seen that with my eyes, the government pays them for alcohol, and so they are drunk and not bothering. You have to have a little head, be the owner of your life. And with drugs you are not free, you think you are the day you start taking them but stop being free, there comes a time when you have an addiction, and you do not have the strength to work or to fight. I stopped on time for everything, and I'm really glad I did. Then obviously there have been people who have stayed on the road and I am very sorry because they were very good people, but not everyone has that lucidity. Now with all this revival of La Movida ... Let's not forget. There are people who are praised and interviewed as the great muse of La Movida. Well, she was a "junkie" who went to bed for a shot, therefore, we cannot make myths about where there were none. I have all the respect for drug addicts, but you can't say what it wasn't, it's not a myth. We had lived a lot of that generation of Lou Reed and those people who seem that nobody had talent if they did not take drugs, and there was a myth of drugs, but that is not. Felix, the father of my daughters, made an exhibition that is now going to tour in many places, called 87, which is a project we had when I was still with him. The magazine "La Luna", which is another of the key magazines of the time, in the year 87, elected the 87 from the 87, and it was to bet on 87 people from all kinds of guilds, plastic, design, actors, musicians, actors, etc. Among those 87 was Felix who was beginning to make shorts. The project consists of knowing what has happened to those 87 and what has been fulfilled with those expectations. I did the documentation of that work, which at the beginning was going to be a documentary, and at the end it was a photographic exhibition. The first surprise is the percentage of people who have died; of 87 are 40. Also, how many of those who promised many have a consolidated career? Few, because it was not really so much what it seemed there was, and I think that many people who have come out with talent, would have come out the same. For example, Antonio Vega, who was a wonderful composer, would have come out the same, even if it wasn't in the context of La Movida. It was simply the environment that touched us. I believe that it is not a special generation, in fact, I believe that it was a less fruitful generation than others, mainly due to uncontrolled drugs. There are many people who continue to believe that they had experienced a lot of freedom, and yes, we had a great time, but it was an apparent freedom, because there was very little information, and information is freedom.
