#PatrimonioFemeninoCiu: Interview with Alfonso Muñoz Cosme. ¿Is CIU a habitable place? Closely linked to Spanish cultural heritage, Alfonso Muñoz Cosme plays a key role in the development of the study on the Urban Heritage of Ciudad Universitaria. Besides holding the positions of Vice Principal of the Ministry of Culture, Director of the Cervantes Institute in Munich and Rome, Manager of the COAM Cultural Foundation and Director of the Institute of Cultural Heritage of Spain; Alfonso has a doctorate in architecture from the Polytechnic University of Valencia and is currently a tenured professor of projects at the ETSAM of the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Because of his long academic career and experience, on December 20th we held an online meeting with him so he could give us some notes; both about the non-existence of women as campus planners, and the conservation and protection of this place’s architectural heritage. The conversation began with the hypothesis that we had maintained up to that point: the non-existent participation of women as active technical agents in the building of Ciudad Universitaria. His affirmative answer went hand in hand with the conjectures that we had elaborated until now, based on the historical circumstances of the time. In that historical context, the role of women was relegated to the domestic sphere, completely separated from the university. In this sense, the conception of the university campus was rationally understood with the separation of two independent worlds: the working and the living area. This helps us defend the aforementioned hypothesis, in which the planning was originally conceived and created by men, and that the possible existence of the group of women in this space was not taken into account. In addition, today it’s still far from being dynamic and functional in many aspects, not adapting completely to the needs of the different types of users. In response to this problem, it is necessary to give it a new vision that includes gender mainstreaming as a vehicle to achieve it. The project seeks to redefine the spaces and adapt them to contemporary demands, because Alfonso stated that the campus has currently lost the notion for which it was created. In the original concept, the creation of a garden-city was sought, a space in which both green areas and built-up areas coexisted and where the university community could be directly connected with the city of Madrid. However, nowadays communication has gotten much worse; public transport does not work as it should, the faculties are excluded from the green spaces that surround them, and the great distance between one area and the other makes it difficult for students and teachers to interact with each other. The interviewee expressed several ideas that could improve the current scenario, for which he proposed: 1) promote a more efficient public transport that provides a comprehensive service, 2) limit the use of private transport to prevent it from occupying green areas, 3) project a much more habitable space that is respectful with the environment, including sustainable buildings and 4) establish a connection between the University City and the center of Madrid. Another of the aspects discussed that we want to develop with our project, is the lack of lighting and the security problem. This could be related to daily dynamics, where illumination stands on its own during the day and somehow ends up relegated for nighttime. Added to this is the deep segregation of the faculties, since there is no interrelation between students and professors from different academic branches. Alfonso stated that this could be due to CIU's management model. The so-called University City is made up of a consortium of different institutions (belonging or not to the university) in which each one has its own objectives and interests, which have not been able to join forces to solve the deficiencies of the campus. In conclusion, Alfonso's thoughts converge with the guidelines of our project, in which the need to return to the original idea and conception of Ciudad Universitaria is reflected. This position assumes the CIU idea as a habitable campus interconnected with the city of Madrid, capable of generating comfortable atmospheres in which university activity can be carried out. This meeting has provided us with guidelines that reinforce the conjectures established in the project, positioning the gender perspective as a strategic element. The incorporation of this resource responds to the current problems and needs of the university community, and complements the methodological proposal that we are developing; the same one that pretends to be reproducible and applicable in other university contexts with similar characteristics and limitations.
