Muelle: an essential artist of the Madrid scene at CIU When we talk about the Movida madrileña in relation to Ciudad Universitaria, a name inevitably comes to mind: that of the graffiti artist Muelle. He, apart from leaving his mark in various parts of the city of Madrid, also did it at CIU. This artist has been in vogue recently for his homage at the Campamento subway station, the neighborhood where he was born. Taking advantage of this recent tribute, we are going to talk briefly about the legendary graffiti artist from Madrid, hoping to provide you with more data and information that may be of interest. Muelle (1965-1995), whose real name is Juan Carlos Argüello, was the pioneer of graffiti in Spain. Born in the Madrid neighborhood of Campamento, he began to leave his signature on the city walls in the early 80s of the 20th century, first in his neighborhood and later throughout the city. During the first third of the decade he was a unique figure. Because of the activity carried out by Muelle, artists such as Blek la Rata, Glub, Tifón (Daniel Guzmán, actor and film director), Joselio and so on appeared. Muelle was a well-known and respected character in the heterogeneous world of the Movida madrileña. Regarding his artistic characteristics, he is the first to introduce the graffiti style called “flechero” in Spain, with little knowledge of what was happening in the New York scene regarding the world of graffiti. The artist left his mark throughout the city putting his signature, the word Muelle, accompanied by the drawing of a pier ending in an arrow. Later, in 1987, he registered his signature, so he added a circled R to his creations. Throughout his career, Muelle experimented with successive designs, increasingly complex, combining different colors, looking for effects with thick edges and adding three-dimensional perspective details. It is a living legacy to this day and it runs counter to the “hip hop graffiti” trend. The artist himself became an icon of the city. Despite the fact that in the beginning his work was not understood, the wake that he marks managed to speak today of the flechero style or logo style as the “native Madrid graffiti”. The style is similar to New York tagging that emerged in the 80s, although Muelle developed it without knowing what was being done in the United States. In 1993 Muelle stopped signing because he considered that his message was already outdated and only two years later he died of liver cancer. In Ciudad Universitaria he left his signature on Senda del Rey street. Today, in this space there is abundant vegetation hiding the wall, making it difficult to find his work.
